South Dakota personal income grew 7.9 percent from the second quarter of 2007 to the second quarter of 2008. According to statistics released in September 2008 by the U.S. Bureau of Economic Analysis, farm proprietors' income rose 31.8 percent. A key factor in this second quarter increase was higher grain prices, particularly for wheat, soybeans and corn. The demand for alternative fuels produced with grains such as corn and soybeans has been a driving force behind rising grain prices during the past year.
