Rabbit and Rogue, Twyla Tharp's premiere for ABT, is submerged in darkness at the start. The dancers wear camouflaging black bodysuits by Norma Kamali with a snake of silver piping. The murky effect, designed by Brad Fields, is frustrating for a while, bur after waves of dancers emerge from inky upstage portals, it takes on the magical quality of a film dissolve. Tharp pushes ballet toward this other medium, particularly with the commissioned score by Danny Elfman (known for film and TV music), and the cartoon-like main characters of the title. The two (Ethan Stiefel and Herman Cornejo in the first cast, Martelo Gomes and Sascha Radetsky in the second) gambol and play one-upmanship in cascading virtuoso moves. The back and forth felt much like the horsing around that goes on during rehearsal or class, when someone does a turn and a friend tries to go one better....
