SPRINGFIELD - Once in a while, Oregon coach George Horton will take off the leash and let his Chocolate Lab, "Fudge," loose on the Thurston High School baseball field.

"He just runs around for no apparent reason," he said. "He's a good dog, but it took a lot of training."

Horton made a similar comparison about his first UO team, which after a month of roller-coaster practices is beginning to grasp Horton's methods. He talked about having to use a "choke chain" at times on the team, but, if you think about it, he's not trying to train dogs.

Horton wants the Ducks to be physically and mentally conditioned.

One day after a lengthy meeting with a renowned sports psychologist, the Ducks had their second intrasquad scrimmage Saturday afternoon, taking what Horton called "a small step forward" in the program's rebuilding process.
