Who thought you could launch a brand of fresh poultry by dressing up chickens in World War I battle helmets and putting them in foxholes? And who thought Rolling Stone magazine could lure more advertisers by poking fun at its own readers? Nancy Rice is who. Rice held the ultimate responsibility for how those revolutionary and award-winning campaigns looked. Her contribution wasn't in conjuring the ideas but in executing them: making sure the concept matched what viewers would see on the screen, in TV and print ads. She helped start a style - "Minneapolis cute" - that was at first ridiculed and later copied widely.

Rice cofounded the Fallon McElligott Rice advertising agency in 1981 - now known as Fallon Worldwide - with partners Tom McElligott and Pat Fallon. The big-name clients it lassoed in its early years and the agency's work catapulted Minneapolis from a no-name advertising scene to the fifth- or sixth-largest advertising community...
