Vinculum Communications of San Diego isn't a household brand, but chances are good that anyone placing an international call could be routed onto its VoIP (Voice Over Internet Protocol) network.

A "carrier's carrier," Vinculum sells wholesale minutes to 150 phone carriers whose customers place international calls.

"There's a good chance that if you call the Philippines through AT&T, you'll be on our network," said Scott Goodwin, who founded the company in 2001 with $350,000.
