Mary Jean Padgett discovered more than she bargained for at the Mississippi State Fair in 2006.

As a nursing educational leader, Padgett dropped by the traveling diabetes exhibit to have her forearm tested "just to see how much pain occurred when the arm was struck as compared to the finger," she explained.

"When my result was obtained, the exhibitor became very concerned as it registered 435," she recalled. "Subsequently, my finger was stuck to compare and it also was in the 400 level. Over the next few days, my physician diagnosed diabetes and I began an immediate regimen of medication and diet. Over the next two weeks, my sugar dropped greatly, and returned to just slightly above normal readings."

Sixteen days later, Padgett had her first colonoscopy, which resulted in the early detection of colon cancer. Days...
