Linda Lesley grew up in Vancleave when it was still a sleepy little town on the Mississippi Gulf Coast.

"It was an idyllic experience," said Lesley, the youngest of three daughters born to Bobby Smith, an engineer at Litton Ingalls Shipyard (now Northrop Grumman Shipbuilding), and his homemaker wife, Lavoy Byrd Smith. "I was surrounded by generations of family, and family friends who were called 'aunt' or 'uncle,' though no blood relation was evident. We had Sunday dinner at MeMaw and PePaw's house, where we ate home-grown vegetables and hand-made buttermilk biscuits." (Lesley's "PePaw," Leo Byrd, was the Jackson County Sheriff in the 1950s and later served as Justice Court judge.)
