On Sept. 6, 2008, a new steel fishing boat left the dock at Fred Wahl Marine Construction and headed to its home port. Most boats when they leave the Reedsport, Ore., boatyard turn northerly, to ports in Oregon, Washington or Alaska.
But the 68' x 23' Carol-N-Rose swung south paralleling the Oregon and California coasts, running down the latitudes as far as Newport Beach, Calif., and the squid, live bait and sardine seine fisheries between the islands of Santa Rosa and San Clemente.
The Carol-N-Rose is the first boat built by Fred Wahl Marine Construction for a southern California boat owner and probably only the second new boat to enter these fisheries in the past 10 years. "[The first one] left southern California seven years ago and went to Oregon," says Steve Greyshock, owner of the Carol-N-Rose.
It was in August 2007, a little less than a year before his boat was delivered, that Greyshock and his wife drove north from Newport Beach shopping for a new boat. "I had read many articles about Fred and his boats and had heard people talk about them.
"After stopping here, I just liked the workmanship, and he had built so many boats," Greyshock says, explaining why he left Reedsport with a signed contract for a new boat.
Greyshock had a couple of requirements for his boat. He wanted less than 600 horsepower and he wanted the hull less than 70 feet long. "In the slips in Ventura, Orange County and Los Angeles where we tie up,...
