Frederick H. Grubbe, CEO, Appraisal Institute
Appraisal Institute Chief Executive Officer Frederick H. Grubbe came to the Appraisal Institute a little more than a year ago, as the organization celebrated it 75th anniversary. On his one-year mark, Valuation sat down and asked him about his perceptions of the industry, the organization and the challenges ahead.
Born and raised in suburban Chicago, where he currently resides with his wife, two children and a Bichon Frise, Grubbe came to the Appraisal Institute after six years as president and chief executive officer for the National Fraternal Congress of America, an association for fraternal benefit societies. Prior to the NFCA, Grubbe served as COO for the Education Resource Group, an international management training company for the life insurance and financial services industries.

It was through that job that Grubbe started to become more aware of appraisers' work, and that view has expanded ten-fold since he has taken the helm at the Appraisal Institute. Before he started he saw real estate appraisers as "the creators of wealth on balance sheets ... because they are the ones who assign value to property." And while that impression really hasn't changed, he now also sees them as "highly ethical, intelligent, dedicated and hard-working individuals who drive the real estate engine."
His concept of the Appraisal Institute also has expanded. "When I started, I didn't know much about the Appraisal Institute other than the research I had done. Today, I see it as a globally recognized leader in valuation practices, education and information," he says.
On the Horizon
One of the bigger challenges for the membership and the profession, he says, is gauging and reacting to the impact of the pending agreement between New York Attorney General Andrew Cuomo, Fannie Mae, Freddie Mac and their overseer, the Office of Federal Housing Enterprise Oversight. Regardless of the outcome of the pending agreement, Grubbe believes that the Appraisal Institute is prepared to provide guidance to its members on measures they should expect to take to minimize the effects of the agreement on their practice.
