"Let's Get a Pup!" Said Kate is a heartwarming story about home. Kate wants a dog so her home doesn't feel so lonely; she and her parents find a shelter puppy to bring home; they express heartfelt wishes for an old dog to find a home; and, finally, they bring that old dog to their own home. In Bob Graham's loose, drolly comic illustrations, Kate's home is realistically rumpled-looking--in direct contrast to the clean but stark animal shelter. Kate's family, like their home, are comfortably rumpled-looking, and Kate's parents sport tattoos and piercings--a common enough sight in the real world yet rarely seen in picture books. In this genuinely moving story, home is surely where the heart is--and where the dogs are. Meeting Kate's family will make readers feel as lucky as these dogs. J.M.B.
