Having a coherent conversation with Neneh Cherry and Andrea Oliver about their new cookery show, Neneh And Andi Dish It Up, is a challenge to say the least.
Firstly, it's hard to get a word in edgeways; they talk endlessly, and usually over each other, finishing each others' sentences and laughing until the tears roll down their cheeks.
Secondly, when the conversation turns to food, they don't actually talk at all. Instead, they smile beatifically and just say, 'Mmmmmmm'.
These two best friends don't just love food, they live for it. 'From the minute I wake up, I think about what I'm going to cook that day,' says Neneh, 43, who divides her time between Stockholm and London. 'The only other person who's as obsessive as me is Andrea.' So obsessive are they, in fact, that Neneh is planning a quick pit-stop at their favourite Chinese restaurant on her way back to the airport and her plane home, 'just because it has the best crispy roast duck in the world'. Listening to Neneh talk so enthusiastically about food, it's difficult to recall her as the unspeakably cool singer, who in 1989 performed Buffalo Stance on Top Of The Pops, heavily pregnant, wearing a tight, black Lycra minidress. Neneh Cherry didn't cook: she rocked.
Gyrate, yes. Marinate, no. But home was always where Neneh's heart was and, after the release of her third album, Man, in 1996, she decided to take time out from the music scene and returned to Sweden - where she grew up - to concentrate on her family. 'With the music business, everything is temporary; things are chewed up and spat out.
