A chorus of yapping dachshunds responded to my knock on the front door. The unlocked door signaled that I was welcome to enter. As I waded through the whirlwind of excited dogs on the familiar route through the vacant kitchen, I noted the same tattered golf magazines on the counter. Helen greeted me as I entered her room. She projected a regal presence despite her semireclining position, wedged between pillows on her bed. The pulsating sound of the oxygen machine became noticeable as the dogs, satisfied that I was harmless, tunneled beneath the comforter as I settled on a nearby chair. Once again we were on the first tee; the stage was set for our dialogue.
