As a civil engineer who has worked in heavy highway construction for 16 years, I have been following the saga of the Interstate 5 bridge over the Willamette River with great interest. After the stream of negative editorials (Register-Guard, Sept. 17) and opinion columns (Don Kahle, Sept. 19, and Eric Gunderson, Sept. 24), I felt compelled to write.

There seems to be a great amount of disappointment because the bridge type that was chosen does not have enough ornamentation for the drivers on I-5 to see. We need to keep in mind that this bridge is not on a scenic highway along the Oregon...
