As sure as vine maple leaves turn red in October, thousands of Oregon hunters will don blaze orange and head into the woods Saturday for opening day of the rifle deer season.

And buck fever appears to be burning a little hotter in Oregon.

After declining for 25 years - from 317,473 in 1981 to 171,680 in 2005, the number of deer hunters in Oregon rose last fall for the second straight year. Elk hunting activity was also up, for the third year in a row.

A total of 188,870 deer hunters took the field in 2007, according to Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife surveys. That's 10 percent above the low-water mark in 2005.

Clearly, hunting season is still a significant occasion in the Beaver State. Hunters spend more than a million days each fall stalking through the woods, sitting in tree stands or driving back roads hoping to spot deer or fresh tracks.
