I've passed him for decades on the University of Oregon campus, the Pioneer Father statue. But as UO students headed to fall term's first classes Monday, something was different about him.

Instead of looking purposely toward the horizon, he was looking down at an object in his hand. A Verizon cell phone.

"Texting the Pioneer Mother across the way," he said, noticing I was staring. "Gotta keep up with the times. An opening day tradition. We chat about the new kids."

It took a little cajoling - two reserved-seat tickets to the UCLA game - for permission to peek at the "Sent"...
