Eugene mayoral candidate and veteran politician Jim Torrey knows what to do with a good political proposal: He makes it his own.

On Monday, Torrey called for the city to hire more firefighters at a west Eugene fire station after learning about the issue from the Eugene firefighters union, which supports his rival, Mayor Kitty Piercy.

When Piercy learned about Torrey's support for more firefighters at the Danebo Fire Station on Berntzen Road, her campaign accused him of being shamelessly opportunistic. Piercy has been quietly working on the issue for months, a fire department union official said.

So it goes just five weeks before the election.
