Count Eugene real estate broker Tim Campbell as among those who were shocked Monday when the House defeated a $700 billion rescue plan for the nation's financial system. That means the credit crunch affecting the whole country is likely to continue, at least for now, Campbell said.

"Since nothing good happened today, I don't think anything good is going to happen tomorrow," he said Monday.

The tight credit market is making itself felt in a variety of ways at the local level, including businesses that have shelved expansion plans, deals that have fallen through and layoffs in industries that rely on credit, Campbell and other business people said.

"I think people are kidding themselves if they don't think they're going to be affected," said Terry Gent, executive vice president and regional manager for Umpqua Bank.
