At age 13, Michael Jeans heard John Fogerty with Creedence Clearwater Revival on the radio and knew he was hooked.

Jeans bought a $5 Kay steel string guitar from a pawn shop in Eugene and taught himself to play. The neck was warped and it was hard to push the strings down. But the effort that brought raw, bleeding fingers has paid off.

Jeans, who grew up in Elmira and now lives in Cottage Grove, was recently nominated as songwriter of the year for the Native American Music Awards for his song "Leather and Feathers."

He and his wife, Brenda King Jeans, were in their car on their way to visit Little Big Horn in Montana, as part of their honeymoon...
