The Elgin Community College baseball team claimed the Illinois Skyway Collegiate Conference title outright Tuesday, downing Waubonsee 9-8 in 9 innings.

Jim Van Syckle (6-2) pitched 5 innings for the win striking out three with 2 walks. Roel Martinez led the Spartans (20-13, 11-3) at the plate with a home run. Teammates Jordan Bigger and Trevor Rutkowski each added a double for Elgin. Matt Wietlispach singled in the seventh inning to get on base while Austin Licon hit another single to score Wietlispach for the final run to defeat Waubonsie.

"We're excited. The guys set this as their goal and we're happy that they played well enough to reach their goal," said ECC coach Bill Angelo.

Boys volleyball

Neuqua d. Bartlett: When it came down to it, Neuqua Valley needed its big guys to close the deal.

With coach Erich Mendoza substituting freely in Game 2, he made sure to call on his heavy hitters when visiting Bartlett threatened to even the Upstate Eight Conference boys volleyball match at one game apiece Tuesday.

The Hawks (9-9, 3-2) took the Game 2 lead 24-21, but Neuqua's Jake Blackman and Brian Clark went back on the court and combined for 5 kills in the 29-27 win. The Wildcats (28-3, 6-0) won the first game 25-16.
