Article Excerpt When Robert Ingram officially took over Oct. 1, 2002, as executive director of the Greenwood-Carroll-Leflore Economic Development Foundation, the job had been vacant for 15 months. During the preceding three-year period, the region had lost nearly 3,000 jobs from plant closings resulting from bankruptcies, mergers, NAFTA and, in some cases, outdated facilities that had lost their competitiveness.
Fifteen months later, Greenwood was listed prominently among eight Mississippi cities that made the nation's top 100 U.S. small towns for new and expanded facilities from 2001 to 2003, according to Site Selection magazine's March 2004 issue. During the two-year period, six facilities located or expanded in Greenwood.
"The Site Selection designation is a great honor and it belongs to everyone in this community as well as to oar many allies who have helped make it happen," said Ingram.
Some of Greenwood's recent successes include Astro Tool's location in Carroll County, which wasn't included in the Site Selection count; the location and expansion of Milwaukee Electric Tool in Greenwood; the announcement of Hamlin Sheet Metal in Greenwood and expansions at Viking, Heartland, America's Catch and John Richard Corporation, all of which are indicative of the activities that Site Selection magazine used in its top 100 ranking category. The chamber recently hosted a ribbon cutting for Ryerson-Tull, a new steel distribution center that will service companies such as Viking and Hamlin.
"We will have an April announcement of approximately 30 jobs which could grow exponentially, and we have a May announcement scheduled for an automotive supplier," he said....
