Observers of the relationship between the Madison County Economic Development Authority (MCEDA) and the Madison County Board of Supervisors differ on how the situation might affect economic development efforts in the county.

Ann Barnes, president of the Madison County Chamber of Commerce, said that media attention to the situation could influence industry leaders and developers to have an incorrect view of the relationships among business groups.

"You could almost get a negative slant of some sort by reading just one article," said Barnes.

Elizabeth Raley, president of the Madison County Foundation, said as far as she could tell, the situation has not affected the day to day work of bringing industry to Madison County.

"MCEDA's moving right along," said Raley. "I don't think it's affected economic development in the county."

The controversy began when the Madison County Board of Supervisors, with three new members elected in November 2003, sought the power to reappoint all members of all supervisor-appointed boards in the county as part of a 90-day audit of county business.
