Grant writing brings millions of dollars to Mississippi.

How important are federal government grants in Mississippi? To get an idea, grants at one university alone, Mississippi State University (MSU), represent a major industry bringing in an average of $120 million per year.

Dr. Sandra Harpole, associate rice president for research at MSU, is considered one of the most successful grant writers at the university. Harpole said paying attention to details is one of the most important elements of successful grant writing.

"My success and experience has been with the National Science Foundation (NSF)," Harpole said. "What I try to tell faculty who ask me about grant writing is you are going to get a request for proposals. The most important thing when you get that is to read it very carefully. Along those lines, yon have to think how what you want to do fits with what the agency is requesting. You have to be very careful about paying attention to details."
