WHEN he saw the gold glinting in the mud below his metal detector,Gordon Innes thought it was probably just a piece of children's jewellery thathad been lost and forgotten.

But the ring he unearthed has been revealed to be an 800-yearold treasure ofsuch historical importance that it will now be housed in the National Museum ofScotland.

The 44-year-old hobby historian's find while on a detecting expedition onfarmland in Lanarkshire turned out to be a 13th-century gold cabochon ring.

The ring is set with a blue sapphire and experts believe it would have belongedto a bishop and would have been buried with him.

Mr Innes, of Fraserburgh, Aberdeenshire, was amazed when assessors told him thefind was extremely significant and the only example of such a ring...
