SAN DIEGO -- Ryan Ludwick batted cleanup Monday for a team carrying the league's third-best won-lost record.

Ludwick carried the team lead in home runs and slugging percentage into the game, a solid distinction on a roster that includes Albert Pujols, by Ludwick's description "maybe the best righthanded hitter in the history of the game."

Yet if his career path had not left Class AAA Memphis two years ago, Ludwick and his .336 average may be nowhere near Busch Stadium and may be nowhere near Major League Baseball.
