Twins first baseman Justin Morneau was in the batting cages before sunrise on many spring training mornings in Fort Myers, Fla., but he began the regular season without the vicious swing that made him one of feared sluggers in the game.

Hitting coach Joe Vavra, who was in the cages with Morneau, knew the swing would come.

"He's been more self-disciplined about the slow start than anybody else," Vavra said. "I'm sure he goes home and thinks about it. But his routine is good and as long as he's not swinging...
