Today I'll answer some common questions I have been getting from people who are wondering how the financial crisis could affect their savings and investments.

Q: I heard that the plan to insure money market funds does not cover tax-exempt funds. Why?

A: When the Treasury Department said Friday that it would insure money market funds for one year, it excluded tax-exempt funds because that might have jeopardized their tax-exempt status. But Sunday night, the Treasury said that it would work with the Internal Revenue Service to remove that roadblock and that it will guarantee any money fund - taxable or tax-exempt - that pays a fee to purchase the insurance.
