Elizeth Darling's absorbing and meticulously researched account of the birth of Modern architecture in Britain during the inter-war period fills a much-neglected gap in the history of European Modernism. While the main protagonists and events will be familiar to many, Darling invites her readers to re-examine conventional assumptions regarding those same players and events. In addition, she introduces many less known participants, all of whom played their part in establishing Modernism in Britain.
According to the author, the standard historical view of the emergence of Modernism in Britain continues to be heavily influenced by the Pevsnerian tradition, with all its methodological prejudices.
