Brian MacLean, chief operating officer and executive vp of Travelers Cos. Inc., has been promoted to president of the Hartford, Conn.-based company. Mr. MacLean has been Travelers' COO and executive vp since May 2005. He will retain his COO role.

Erie, Pa.-based Erie Indemnity Co. has named Terrence W. Cavanaugh president and chief executive officer. Mr. Cavanaugh comes to Erie from Chubb Corp., where he most recently was senior vp and COO of the insurer's surety business. John J. Brinling Jr., interim president and CEO since August 2007, will return to retirement after helping with Mr. Cavanaugh's transition.
