The songs have a reggae groove that fans of the Police, Sublime or the Clash can chill to.

But those who love Bob Marley and the Wailers for the dose of spirituality Marley injected into his songs will be especially impressed with Zeda's Beat Box, a local band releasing its first CD next week.

While Marley's music is a touchstone for any modern reggae or ska band, the message and the lyrics of Zeda's Beat Box's songs come from Judaism, not the Rastafari movement.

"The whole goal is to take Jewish culture mainstream, not bring the mainstream to Jewish culture," said Dave Simon, the group's lead singer. "When I listen to Bob Marley, I don't know what he's talking about all the time, but I still dig it."
