IT was one of Scotland's most haunting murder cases - two young brotherskilled by their widower father, then thrown into a flooded quarry.

When they were found 18 months later, pathologist Sir Sydney Smith made hisname solving the crime - then snatched some of the children's body parts formedical science.

For almost a century, they have been kept as specimens by Edinburgh University.

Now, in a remarkable twist to the bleak tale, an American woman claiming to bea relative of the boys has demanded their remains be handed over for Christianburial.

Maureen Marella says her grandmother was the cousin of Bridget Johnston, themother of 1911 Hopetoun Quarry murder victims William and John Higgins.
