What's beneath the surface view of Los Angeles and how do those elements inspire art?

Those questions are at the root of the Los Angeles Philharmonic's "Concrete Frequency" festival, a multidisciplinary series that probes the artistic definition of L.A.

The adventurous two-week examination of the relationship between music and the urban environment includes three orchestral programs, an electronic concert and a singer/songwriter program, enhanced by a film series, an art exhibition and a symposium.

The festival opens Friday with a performance featuring festival director David Robertson conducting the L.A. Phil at Disney Hall and wraps up Jan. 17 with a program called "Man-Machine in the Digital City," featuring Tokyo's Cornelius and British techno duo Plaid.
