Theres a scene in Casino Royale that always makes me blanche: the onewhere 007 s Aston goes barrel-rolling down the road in one of the mostspectacular crashes ever to grace a Bond film.

Dont get me wrongits not that Ive got a soft spot for Daniel Craig. No, the subject of myemotional attachment is the Aston Martin DBS. Seeing such a brilliant carsmashed oblivion doesnt make comfortable viewing for a motoring writer.

Why is the DBS so special? Well, for a start its the first Aston that sounds asgood as it goes the din it kicks out is both glorious and highly intimidating.

Its as if Aston Martin has distilled the essence of a raging thunderstorm andinstalled that under the long, plunging bonnet.

Theres a racetrack hardness to the note of the 510bhp, six-litre engine and, ifyou give it some, you can hear the noise emanating from the drainpipe-sizeexhausts from miles away.
