Most of us have participated in simulation exercises throughout our nursing careers. DeYoung (2009) defines simulation as "controlled representation of reality." Disaster drills and basic life support exercises are examples of simulation that help us prepare for the potential crisis events in the work setting. If we make mistakes during these simulations, no harm is caused to patients. Simulation has been used in nursing clinical and educational settings for some time. In recent years, the use of highfidelity human simulators has become more common.

DeYoung (2009) differentiates among low, moderate, and high-fidelity simulation. Fidelity refers to the degree of simulation realism.
