Asian America has not had a great many opportunities to enjoy graphic literature in the mainstream media in the United States. Historically, this particular genre has been more damaging than uplifting to the Asian American communities. The predominant image of the slit-eyed, pig-tailed, and buck-toothed "Heathen Chinee" that originated from the nineteenth-century cartoon culture has apparently left a lasting imprint on the popular American imagination. Even in the supposedly more mature and more realistic medium, film, Asian and Asian American characters have oftentimes been cartoonized into racial stereotypes.
