Jaime Hernandez's Locas is a vast collection; the storyline alone spans the course of some twenty-five years in the life of Margarita Luisa Chascarillo (or Maggie, as she is familiarly known by her friends) and her friend and lover Esperanza Leticia Glass (or Hopey). The volume is evidence of more than a decade of comic writing. The Maggie and Hopey narratives which make up Locas originally ran as shorts embedded in single issues of the long-running comics series Love and Rockets, penned by Jaime Hernandez and his brothers, Mario and Gilbert "Beto" Hernandez.

The early Maggie and Hopey stories can best be described as science fiction. We find Maggie working as a "prosolar mechanic" in exotic locales, fixing rocketships on dinosaur-ridden islands and resisting the control of billionaire despots. Almost immediately, however, Hemandez drops...
