Cultural diversity initiatives are nothing new to longtime comics publisher DC Comics, home to iconic superheroes such as Superman, Batman, and Wonder Woman. Audiences who grew up in the 1970s will recall the introduction of Samurai (Japanese), Apache Chief (Native American), and Black Vulcan (African American), to the animated television program Super Friends, to name one memorable example. Recently the company began a new push to diversify its base of heroes along many simultaneous lines: the new Batwoman is a lesbian, the new Blue Beetle is Mexican American, the new Firestorm is African American, and the new Atom is Asian.
