For a while there, from the late 1970s to the mid-'80s, it looked as though Tommy Tune would be a permanent, 6' 6" presence on the musical-theater scene. He was winning Tonys as a performer, director, and choreographer--nine in all. He collected Drama Desk awards, Obies, and this magazine's Lifetime Achievement Award. And audiences loved his shows too, making hits of My One and Only, Nine, and The Will Rogers Follies.

But it's been about a decade since his canny combination of show-biz razzmatazz and high style was on a Broadway menu. It's not that he wasn't working: Tune toured with Ann Reinking in Bye Bye Birdie; he worked on the problem-plagued Busker Alley until it bit the dust for good after he shattered his foot...
