If it hits the BBC news bulletins in Britain, it's a hot story. This one did, and it turned out to be sizzling. The news that The Royal Ballet's artistic director had resigned in September, just a few weeks into the new season, set balletomanes buzzing and journalists digging. Clashes of unrest were reported in the studios of Covent Garden in late summer but such an immediate turnover was not anticipated. After all, Ross Stretton had only completed one year of his three-year contract. So was he pushed or did he jump?

The official Royal Ballet announcement stated that the director had resigned, but unofficial murmurings said he was forced to resign.

Stretton took over the unenviable task of running Britain's historic showcase ballet company when Anthony Dowell retired (gracefully) in 2001. A tough Australian, he was a shock choice to many, over the other potential applicants who offered better connections...
