RESISTORS are indispensable devices in all electric circuits for current control, but some electrical appliances require more accurate resistance values from these devices than others do.

"Errors in a range of 1-2% are permissible for resistors used in television and radio sets," says Kusumi Shoji, president of Alpha Electronics, "but requirements become much more stringent for things like scales, satellites and medical equipment such as CT and MRI scanning systems. Our company is capable of limiting the allowance for resistance errors to 0.005%."

Alpha Electronics was founded in 1978 by Kusumi and a small team of fellow engineers formerly employed by a TDK subsidiary famous for its foil resistors and laminated ceramic condensers. TDK had decided to absorb the subsidiary's sales and R&D corps, leaving only a plant behind.

Says Kusumi, "A few of us couldn't accept the situation and decided to form our own company, Alpha Electronics. We thought our company would earn enough to support a few people, perhaps enough for us to muddle by, but we were not totally confident that it would survive."

Having received few orders in its first year, Alpha Electronics was coming to the conclusion that there was not enough demand for the high accuracy products it was making, when its engineers hit upon the root of the problems that were then plaguing electronic scales. They discovered that these appliances were malfunctioning, usually one or two years after purchase, mostly due to deterioration of the resistors.

"In addressing the problem, we knew that we would...
