Robert Wolfslau is grateful for the cooling shade of his sweet gum tree. Raking its annual drop of crunchy sticker balls is his homage to nature's goodness.

When a city crew wanted to cut the tree down to make way for a new sidewalk, the retired brewery machinist protested all the way to the mayor's office and saved it.
