Back in the Thirties, Brentford's Great West Road became known as TheGolden Mile, with major corporations constructing glamorous Art Deco factoriesand offices along its length to show off their success.

But while the road has remained a strategically important location forbusiness, its gloss has long since worn off.

Much of the Art Deco architecture was demolished and, with an M4 overpass, theGolden Mile became just another stretch of West London suburban sprawl.

Today, though, massive regeneration projects are revitalising this part ofBrentford and the neighbouring towns of Feltham and Hounslow - places whichhave been shabby and downat-heel for years.

A major driving force is the opening of Heathrow's Terminal 5 next year. It'sexpected to bring many new jobs and commercial activities to a part of thecapital already being rebranded as Heathrow Quarter by developers.
