TRANSPORT chiefs have pledged to build Ireland's first underground trainline within five years - but admitted that the project will soar way overbudget.

The admission came at yesterday's announcement of the planned five kilometreDART line which will connect Heuston Station to the Docklands.

The project has been branded as the most important public transport plan in theState.

The innovative Interconnector will link up with major Intercity rail routes aswell as the Luas.

IarnrUd ...ireann has set an ambitious five-year target for the tunnel'scompletion, with construction due to begin in 2010. The plan is rivalled inmagnitude only by the E700million Port Tunnel project, opened in December overa year behind schedule, after being dogged with obstacles, including thediscovery of water leaks.
