Alaska's geoduck diving industry has taken steps toward resolving a longstanding sticking point between divers and state officials. Taking those steps may lead to a boost in the fishery's profits.

In September, geoduck divers and the Alaska Department of Environmental Conservation ratified a new shellfish testing plan. The new method changes how divers and processors test the big clams for unmarketable concentrations of paralytic shellfish poison.

The testing methodology has long been a problem between the divers and the department. Divers disliked the old method because they expended harvesting effort before sending out geoduck samples.
