Compared to other Pacific groundfish species, petrale sole is doing pretty well. Stock assessments indicate the fishery is at 43 percent of its unfished biomass.

That looks good when compared with bocaccio, which is at two percent of its unfished biomass. It also compares favorably with canary rockfish, which in the southern end of its range is at only eight percent of its historical, unfished biomass.

Nevertheless, the fishery faces many difficulties as a result of efforts to promote recovery of the region's troubled groundfish species. Those efforts target groundfish species that have been declared overfished, such as darkblotched rockfish, estimated to be at 12 percent of its unfished abundance.
