Red snapper fishermen may be poised or a good opening Feb. 1 if the state of the market late in 2002 is any indication. After years of dismal, derby-depressed prices, fishermen finally were getting some decent money during the first fall mini-season, Oct. 1-10.

Ex-vessel prices during October 2002 in Florida's western panhandle were in fact higher than Fulton Fish Market wholesale prices in October and November 2001.

"The prices were awesome," says David Krebs, owner of Ariel Seafood

in Destin. "We paid $3.10 on the opening, $2.85 at the end."

By comparison, in November 2001, 1- to 15-pound Florida red snapper were selling for $2.85 at Fulton.

The October mini-season prices were a whole dollar higher...
