It was a risky business for New York City Ballet to give over its spring season to a Jerome Robbins celebration, marking the 10th anniversary of his death. Most ballet companies that started in the 20th century have a "founding choreographer"; NYCB has two. But imagine Britain's Royal Ballet giving a season completely dominated by Sir Frederick Ashton, or American Ballet Theatre offering--and this admittedly is a trickier case--a season of largely Tudor. Moreover, NYCB is very clearly the House That George Balanchine Built, and here, for the first time, Balanchine was playing second fiddle to "the sorcerer's apprentice," Robbins.

Robbins is not all that much admired by many New York dance critics, who tend to damn him with the faint praise...
