New York City Ballet mounted one of its most ambitious and, for the most part, successful seasons in recent memory. It focused on the 33 ballets of the Jerome Robbins Celebration-many of which had not been seen in years--the most comprehensive retrospective ever of his ballets. Most of the dancers who performed these ballets never worked with him or even met him--Robbins died in 1998--nevertheless they did themselves proud in this Herculean effort.
Community, relationships, and gatherings are at the core of all of Robbins' ballets, from the sinister man-crunching insect ballet The Cage and the macabre Dybbuk, to the laugh-out-loud The Concert and the happy-go-lucky Fancy Free. Robbins camouflaged the complexity and difficulty of his choreography by making movement appear effortless, spontaneous, even casual, and by adding the human touch.
