Alignment is the backbone of any dance technique. Dancing inherently throws it off, but no matter the type of choreography, contemporary or classical, the body must be aligned to do it. Alignment is to a dancer what grammar is to a writer: a basic tool that provides the freedom to explore the endless possibilities that the medium offers.

Simply put, alignment is the art of standing straight on two feet. In dance, however, it is more complicated than that. First, dancers don't dance by standing still. Second, they aren't always in an anatomically natural position when they dance. The moment the feet and legs are rotated outward from the hips, as they are in ballet, the entire position of the body changes. A dancer must relearn how to stand on his or her own...
