Not every year yields up a Next Big Thing in contemporary dance. Few would dispute, though, that Hofesh Shechter ticked that box in Britain last season, following sold-out performances that had the electric buzz of a rock concert, the clout of a political rally, and elements of violence and humor. Here was a choreographer whose work had scale--not just in terms of physical space but also vision. His U.S. debut at Jacob's Pillow this summer was a smash hit and this month he comes to City Center's Fall for Dance festival in New York.
