A FIRE burns in the black Victorian grate as the regulars begin to turn up at an attractive old pub in a tiny North Cornish village.

A young man and woman seat themselves at the table by the dartboard. At first glance, there is little which would mark them as being out of the ordinary. Her blanket-style cardigan has vestiges of chic, his tan seems a little deep for this part of the world. But the barman knows them, and none of the half-dozen other customers takes any notice.

Well, why should they? After all, Andrew Ridgeley, George Michael's one-time Wham! partner, and Keren Woodward, his girlfriend of six years and a member of all-girl group Bananarama, have been coming here most evenings since they moved to the area in November.

Sometimes, including this Tuesday evening, Keren's nine-year-old son Thomas will be dropped off at the pub by the couple's Australian housekeeper, and allowed to play pool with his mother for half-an-hour.

Though Thomas's real father is male model David Scott-Evans, it is clear the three of them - Andrew, Keren and Tom - are a close-knit family. They talk quietly to one another, and share jokes with the barman.

It is hard to connect this Andrew Ridgeley with the one parodied on Spitting Image - along with George Michael - as a pair of dancing buttocks.

In the heyday of Wham!, his special `turn' was to stuff shuttlecocks down his tight white shorts.

Off-stage, too, he was the life...
